Below are some basic terms that every videographer should know
- B-ROLL (production)
Video footage used as a cover up or transition between clips. Usually accompanied by voice over or narration.
- WHITE BALANCE (production)
The adjustment made within a camera, which allows it to capture the true colors; compensating for the difference in lighting temperature.
- Nonlinear Editing (NLE) (post-production)
Type of editing which allows for random access to audio and video footage. Examples of nonlinear editing systems are Final Cut or Vegas.
- ZOOM (production)
Bringing the scene or the subject closer by adjusting the camera lens.
- PANNING (production)
Moving the camera horizontally; capturing a panoramic shot.
- TILT (production)
The up and down movement of a camera; capturing a shot vertically
- Close Up (production)
Close up pushes the zooms in as close as possible to the subject. The close up is a tight frame around the subject.
- Medium Shot (production)
The medium shot fits the subject in any frame between the close up and the long shot.
- Long shot (production)
The long shot is a loose frame on the subject. It is sometimes used as an establishing shot; followed by a medium shot or close up.
- Leadroom (production)
The space left in front of the subject, inside the frame. Leadroom is especially important for capturing video of moving subjects.
